What is Elite – The New Kind?
Elite – The New Kind (aka E-TNK) is a faithful remake of the space combat & trading game ‘Elite’. It was created by reverse-engineering the original BBC Elite code and writing equivalent new code in C. The code forms a fully working game.
Where can I download Elite – The New Kind?
A Windows version of the game and its source code used to be available for download from this site. Unfortunately I was asked by David Braben, one of the original Elite’s authors, to stop distributing the game. E-TNK is therefore no longer available for download.
Will you send me a copy of Elite – The New Kind?
Sorry, I can’t because of the copyright problems mentioned above.
Can you send me a save game with lots of credits?
No, that would be cheating.
Is E-TNK still being developed?
No, the project completed its primary goal of reverse engineering the original Elite code. All my free time is currently being spent on other projects.
When I destroy a pirate ship the bounty replaces my credits. Is this a bug?
The number that flashes up after a kill is not the bounty, it is your total credits after the bounty has been added. That is the way the original BBC version of Elite did it.
How many missions are there in E-TNK?
Two missions are implemented in E-TNK. They are the original two missions from BBC Disk Elite. The first mission is triggered when you notch up 256 kills (your first Right on Commander! message). You need to be in either Galaxy 1 or 2. The second mission comes when you’ve made 1280 kills. You need to have completed the first mission and be in Galaxy 3.
How do I force a mis-jump into Witchspace?
If you have maximum climb when the hyperspace timer reaches zero you’ll mis-jump and enter Witchspace. Mis-jumps occasionally happen at random as well. Destroying Thargoids while in Witchspace will not gain you any bounty. You will still be award a kill point for each one destroyed.
What constitutes ‘a kill’?
Anything that you destroy either by laser or with a missile gives you one kill point. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a cargo cannister or a Thargoid mothership, they’re both worth one point. This is how the original BBC Elite did the scoring. Later versions of Elite (C64, NES etc) gave more points for harder targets and less for easier ones. Note that destroying ships with an energy bomb does not get you any kill points. If you destroy a ship by ramming it you are award a kill.
How many kills do you need for each rank?
0 = Harmless
8 = Mostly Harmless
16 = Poor
32 = Average
64 = Above Average
128 = Competent
512 = Dangerous
2560 = Deadly
6400 = Elite
What does ‘Right on Commander!’ mean?
This message will flash up every 256 kills.
How do I sell equipment?
You can’t. None of the original versions of Elite allowed you to do this. You do get a refund on your lasers if you upgraded them though.
